Shots fired

My neighbor texted me yesterday afternoon.  

 "Hey do you know what's going on around my house. I just saw on my cameras the cops chasing someone in my yard."

I had no idea, I was in the house, in meetings. I went outside and the street was empty. Whatever it was, it was already over. 

She shared the video. Some guy wearing only shorts sprinted inside the fence up the side of her house to the corner, and across her front yard, pursued very slowly by a police officer. 

Then he tripped on something in the yard and was tackled by another officer running from the other direction. 

Later that day, as I was about to go into a Teams meeting, someone fired a bunch of shots outside. 

I've learned which guns make what noise, so I knew immediately it was those kids again with their .380 ACP, which was confirmed the minute I came out. 

One of the homeless rode by on his bike. 

"Hurry, they're running that way," he pointed. "It's those guys, the young guy with the orange dreads."

I wasn't in any hurry to run after a guy with a gun, but I did call 911.

No arrests, I heard later.

 A man was sitting on the sill of the foundation of the old club across the street, a popular place for people to hang out in decent weather. Far enough from the shelter to be peaceful, seemingly abandoned enough not to catch people's attention.  There's an alley on the other side of the old club that people frequently use to get high, fuck, or use the toilet, and earlier I had to run off a nearly-psycho homeless woman and an old man I actually casually know to keep them from doing one or more of those things. A couple of years ago when she was fairly fresh on the street, the same woman crouched behind her wagon and shit on the sidewalk while I looked on from my porch. It wasn't until she left I saw the pile of shit. Blur

I've reached the point that all the events of the past several days, no matter how grotesque or revolting fade into one long stream of coffee cups, pools of vomit, and misery.  Yesterday apropos of nothing Angel walked past me and asked if I could throw away a bag she was carrying that clearly contained human shit.  I merely glanced at the shit bag before hefting it into the trashcan.  We installed beehives on our lot down the street, both to have hives and to deter the drug users who tend to camp, shit, and use drugs on the lot.  While we were working on this a red truck pulled up and a man got out, walked about ten feet from the sidewalk and got ready to piss.  I was about twenty feet away, wearing a bee suit.  When I saw what he was doing, I yelled at him. He acted offended, and a buddy of his stepped in to mollify me.  After his friend and he apologized they went across the street to the homeless enclave to get drugs.

 My neighbor has been having trouble with people across the street from her house.  She lives on the corner next to both the club and the land the shelter is on.  She called me the other day because a homeless woman who was sharing a tent with a homeless guy got out completely naked in broad daylight and was just hanging out.  So I went and talked to the diner staff who said they'd been hearing complaints. A day later I walked down there again, to see what was going on. Three homeless guys were piled up under the club awning. One was slumped over on his stuff, high and passed out. Another was as glazed as was humanly possible, and a third was leaning against the wall seemingly not high at all.  I offered each of them a chocolate foil-wrapped coin from kids Christmas stockings, and told them quietly we would prefer they not smoke their drugs so close to our homes.
